What does “vegan” mean?
Vegan states that a product was made without animal-derived components, but consumers increasingly also read it as a general environmental or ethical promise. Under the EmpCo Directive permissibility depends on the claim staying limited to the actual facts and not being stretched into a blanket environmental benefit; such overreach can be misleading.
Why this term is risky
Whether this claim is permissible depends heavily on context: the reference point (product, packaging or company), specificity and available evidence are decisive. Without a clear reference and proof, there is a risk of being misleading.
