What does “biologisch abbaubar” mean?
Biodegradable suggests that a product breaks down in the environment without residue, although degradation often occurs only under specific technical conditions and timeframes. Under the EmpCo directive such a claim is permissible only with concrete, recognised and publicly accessible evidence specifying the degradation conditions, timeframe and residues. Without that substantiation the term is considered misleading, because consumers readily take it to mean complete and unconditional breakdown.
Why this term is risky
Blanket, unspecific environmental claims without concrete, verifiable evidence are considered misleading where no recognised outstanding environmental performance is demonstrated. They remain permissible only with concrete, publicly accessible proof – such as a recognised certification.
