What does “gentechnikfrei” mean?
The statement promises that a product was made without genetic engineering. It is only permissible with concrete, recognised evidence and becomes especially misleading where genetically modified components are already not approved or are untypical for the relevant product group. The notice must not feign an advantage that is already required by law.
Why this term is risky
Free-of claims are misleading where the named substance is not present in comparable products anyway or is already legally banned – this suggests an advantage that every product in the category shares. Such claims remain permissible only where the absence is genuinely relevant and can be substantiated.
