What does “grüner Strom” mean?
The claim presents electricity as coming from renewable sources and therefore especially environmentally friendly. As a general environmental claim the EmpCo Directive requires concrete, recognised and publicly accessible evidence, for example on origin and additionality of generation. Without a substantiated basis and transparent accounting misleading advertising is likely.
Why this term is risky
Blanket, unspecific environmental claims without concrete, verifiable evidence are considered misleading where no recognised outstanding environmental performance is demonstrated. They remain permissible only with concrete, publicly accessible proof – such as a recognised certification.
