What does “zero waste” mean?
Zero waste promises that a product or process produces virtually no waste, a far-reaching and easily overstated claim. Under the EmpCo Directive it is only permissible with concrete, recognised and publicly accessible evidence; where residual materials or packaging waste remain, the claim quickly becomes misleading.
Why this term is risky
Blanket, unspecific environmental claims without concrete, verifiable evidence are considered misleading where no recognised outstanding environmental performance is demonstrated. They remain permissible only with concrete, publicly accessible proof – such as a recognised certification.
