What does “fair” mean?
Fair suggests just social or environmental conditions along the supply chain, yet as a buzzword remains substantively indeterminate without defined criteria. Under the EmpCo directive such a social or ethical claim is permissible only with concrete, recognised and publicly accessible evidence documenting the assured standards. Absent such proof, the term is misleading because it raises unfounded expectations in consumers.
Why this term is risky
Blanket, unspecific environmental claims without concrete, verifiable evidence are considered misleading where no recognised outstanding environmental performance is demonstrated. They remain permissible only with concrete, publicly accessible proof – such as a recognised certification.
