What does “Science Based Targets” mean?
Science Based Targets refers to science-based climate targets reviewed by an independent initiative. Where such targets are actually recognised the claim is permissible; it becomes misleading when targets are merely asserted but not validated or the implementation status is left open. What matters is a substantiated, publicly comprehensible review status.
Why this term is risky
Claims that rely on a label or certificate are only as robust as the system behind them. Self-awarded or not independently verified “labels” carry a high risk of being misleading.
